CUP WEEKEND EXHIBITION RESULTS
RECORD ENTRIES AT CUP WEEKEND EXHIBITION
The annual Cup Weekend Exhibition of the Artists’ Society of Phillip Island Inc. attracted a record number of 208 entries this year. The opening night on Friday the 29th was in full swing with music provided by ‘SWonderful, the popular and well known duo Mike and Judy Doyle. President Jill Rogers congratulated the exhibiting members on their high standard of presentation and introduced Antoinette Mitchell the BCSC manager for Strengthening Communities who formally opened the exhibition.
Guests were amazed at the innovative talent of the various artists and sales were brisk. Curator Diana Edwards and her team of volunteers displayed the works to their best advantage, using further new display stands which were manufactured by Hype Diversified, Settlement Road Cowes. Diana, who was a finalist in last year’s YAC award, very generously donated one of her beautiful watercolour paintings as the raffle prize.
Jill Rogers gave a President’s Encouragement Award to the 6 and 7 year old new Associate Members, Tom Hollingworth and Lili Hollingworth for their lovely resin paintings.
ASPI appreciates the generous sponsorship of the exhibition awards by local businesses and services who acknowledge the commitment of the Society to engage the wider community in promoting Arts and Culture.
Shelley McDermott, Senior Curator at the Latrobe Regional Gallery had the difficult task of formally judging the awards.
Antoinette Mitchell presented the major award – the BSCS ‘Your Art Collection (YAC) Award’ for Best in Show to Diana Edwards for her large watercolour ‘Autumn Colours’. The judge commented on being drawn to the beautiful light in the painting. A Highly Commended in this section was awarded to photographer James Vereker for his wonderful ‘Bronze Warrior.’
This the first of five YAC awards for the 2017 round. The following four winners will be chosen in 2017 from the San Remo Rotary Art Show in March; the Inverloch Art Exhibition in March; the Bass Coast Easter Art Exhibition; and the Corinella Traditional Art Exhibition in June. Each of the five finalists will exhibit four works at the final exhibition in September 2017 where the winning artist will be awarded a further $5000 and the winning work acquired by the BCSC.
